| 1853 | Foundation of COMPAGNIE GENERALE DES EAUX in Paris. Initially the company only distributed drinking water. Its activities later included wastewater treatment. |

| 2000 | Foundation of the VIVENDI ENVIRONNEMENT subsidiary |
| 2001 | The company goes public, first at the Paris Stock Exchange and later in New York as well. |
| 2002 | Vivendi Universal sells its interest in Vivendi Environnement in several phases. |
| 2003 | Vivendi Environnement becomes independent of Vivendi Universal and re-brands to VEOLIA ENVIRONNEMENT. Its water division re-brands to VEOLIA WATER |
