Protecting Biodiversity

As the quality of a natural environment has a direct effect on water quality, Veolia Water has integrated biodiversity as a key factor when it comes to its operational activities.

The activities associated with the production of drinking water and the treatment of wastewater that Veolia Voda Group companies conduct are closely tied to nature by their very essence. As a stakeholder in the water cycle, Veolia Water, a member of the international group Veolia Environnement, uses primarily its proprietary technological know-how and tries to minimize the environmental impact of its activities. The company focuses especially on protection of water resources. In addition, Veolia Water proposes to implement initiatives on differentiated management of green spaces around its facilities wherever this is relevant.

Examples of projects realized abroad:

Crépieux-Charmy, Lyon - France

Denge Beach - Great Britain

In addition, we as a company pursue further projects that directly support the preservation of vegetable and animal species as well as the education of children and adults in the spirit of conservation. The projects include, for example:

  • Veolia Foundation's project titled "Let's Give Back To Nature What Belongs To It", as part of which Veolia in cooperation with the Czech Fishing Union supports the return of the salmon and eels to our rivers.
  • Trees For Life - Office Depot in cooperation with the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague plant trees in areas where Veolia Voda operates water management facilities (water treatment plants, pumping stations, wastewater treatment stations etc.). The number of trees planted depends on the turnover realized by Veolia at Office Depot. Aside from the aesthetic benefits for the environment, trees create a natural barrier and eliminate, among other things, the unpleasant odour from areas near treatment plants. More than 250 trees will be planted in 2010.
  • Veolia Voda as a partner to the Water House - we support the creation of an environmental visitor centre near the Želivka (Švihov) water reservoir. The project implementer is the Czech Union for Nature Conservation unit in Vlašim and Veolia is the main partner to the project. The Water House will be a centre in a contemporary architectural style providing information and education on the topic of water and biodiversity conservation near the Želivka reservoir to its visitors. The project is currently in the implementation design stage, with the start of erection slated for the autumn of 2011 and commissioning planned for the spring of 2012.
  • BioGRANTS VEOLIA 2010 - a new internal competition for the employees of all the Veolia Voda companies in which it is possible to obtain up to 50.000 CZK for the beneficial ecological project realized in the environment of the applicant. Veolia aims to support the concrete local activities of associations of conservationists, hunters, fishermen, scouts, municipal authorities, schools or individuals focused on improving of the environment or protecting endangered vegetable or animal species.
