Technology and innovation

We employ leading water experts, deliver our own technological know-how, and strive for maximum efficiency and professionalism in the operation of water treatment equipment.

Working in an environment-related field requires knowledge of numerous scientific disciplines, such as chemistry, metrology, energy management optimization, cogeneration enhancement, and information systems. Research at Veolia Environnement is the domain of Veolia Environnement Research & Innovation,an outfit collaborating with more than 200 academic and industrial partners and engaged in its own research at five company research centres on four continents.

In the Czech Republic, the principal technical issues and projects covered by the Veolia Voda Group are:

  • systematic reductions in the energy consumption of installations under management,
  • reduced consumption of chemicals in drinking water production and in wastewater treatment,
  • the creation and use of renewable energy sources - small hydropower plants and cogeneration units,
  • trials and finalization of the development of new wastewater treatmenttechnologies designed to minimize environmental impacts,
  • reduced fuel consumption - GPS
  • regular meetings of experts from the Group's companies (expert committees)

IDEO,Veolia Water's global project to promote innovation, was formed in 2008 and introduced in the Czech Republic in 2010. Employees are invited to suggest ways of innovating any activities or work practices at their company. Ineach country, projects are assessed by an expert committee, and those individuals and teams that come up with successful proposals receive financial rewards. Innovations are shared internationally through a dedicated web portal.

Code of Ethics

The Ethics, Commitment and Responsibility programme, crafted at theheadquartersofparent company Veolia Environnement in France, is common to all divisions and countries in which the Group operates and is respected by 240,000 employees worldwide.

The document is rooted in compliance with national standards and the recommendations of international organizations, particularly as regards respect for cultural differences and environmental needs.

Purchasing strategy

Central purchasing by Veolia Voda in the Czech Republic has been incorporated into the Ethics, Commitment and Responsibility programme and is governed by two documents setting out an ethical and legal framework for Veolia Environnement's worldwide activities.

Veolia Voda ČR uses central (global) framework agreements for the purchase of materials and chemicals and receives the results of related audits. The company relies on these framework agreements as its operations in the Czech Republic draw on cooperation with multinational corporations. It goes beyond the bounds of the above agenda by running controlled checks on the quality of the chemicals and materials supplied, especially those that come into contact withdrinking water. Suppliers who repeatedly fail to comply with guarantees are automatically excluded from thecontractor portfolio.

Operating model

In the Czech Republic - as elsewhere - a split operating model is in use in the water industry and is applied by Veolia Voda. This is the most common operating model in the Czech Republic (accounting for 67% of the Czech market).

A split operating model usually entails long-term contracts between the infrastructure owner (the public sector) and an operator (the private sector). Their relationship is governed by a contract on the operation of water infrastructure. The operator pays the owner rent for the use of infrastructure and collects water supply and wastewater treatment service charges at rates approved by the owner. Revenues from water supply and wastewater treatment service charges belong to the operator, who uses them to cover operating costs and make a reasonable profit.
